Javanese Style Rod puppets (23” tall)

Each Javanese style rod puppet is made from ten individually crafted ceramic parts.  After they are finished and glaze fired, they are put together and adorned with mixed media to enhance the vivid textures and colors.  Various glass beads, feathers, suede, and fabric are carefully selected and added to bring the puppets to life.  The head can be positioned to express different gestures and emotions.  Rods are attached at the hands to allow free movement of the arms and torso.  These creations were inspired and created as a culmination of my interests and experience in ceramics, dance, travel, color, textures, sculpture love of Asian cultures.  The experience in bringing them to life was mysterious and magical, as nothing was planned, but the puppets unique personalities developed as they were being created.  I hope you enjoy them, and are able to relate to them on some level.
